TACOMA, Wash. – For the third consecutive game, the Puget
Sound women's soccer team was pushed into overtime, but it
emerged victorious on Theresa Henle's game-winner in the
105th minute. The Loggers pushed past Willamette 2-1 in their NWC
opener.
Well into the second overtime period, Henle found herself alone
with the goalkeeper and finally found the back of the net to give
the Loggers the hard-fought victory.
The Loggers had dominated possession for most of the match and
outshot the Bearcats 23-6, including 18-5 in the first 90 minutes,
but could not push ahead in regulation. After Willamette tied up
the game in the 48th minute at 1-1, the Loggers had a golden
opportunity to regain the lead.
The Bearcat goalie came out to intercept a pass, but the ball
flew over her head in the 56th minute. Mikaela Freeman was the
first to a high bouncing ball, but her header hit the crossbar to
keep the game tied.
Serwaah Fordjour's first goal of the season had given the
Loggers their original lead. Fordjour won a bouncing ball in the
box off a corner kick and deposited it into the goal in the 42nd
minute.
The Loggers are back at it tomorrow when they host Lewis &
Clark at 12 p.m. on Peyton Field.
