TACOMA, Wash. – The crosstown rivalry between the
University of Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran University began in
the Loggers favor as the women's soccer team defeated the
Lutes 2-0 on Wednesday. Casey Thayer earned the shutout as the
Loggers cruised to a victory.
The first half was evenly played as both team traded scoring
opportunities. However, Jenny Moore was the only player to find the
back of the net as the Loggers (7-1-1, 4-1 NWC) took a 1-0 lead in
the 23rd minute.
Moore swooped in on a rebound after a great save by the Lute
(1-7, 1-4 NWC) goalie. Moore simply tapped it in for the Logger
lead.
After allowing seven shots in the opening half, the Loggers
tightened up in the second half and kept possession in their half
for the majority of the half. The Lutes did not fire a shot in the
closing 45 minutes as the Loggers peppered the Lute defense with 16
shots.
Theresa Henle finally padded the Loggers lead with a goal that
trickled into the corner of the net in the 81st minute. Henle
received a cross right at the top of the 18-yard box and squeezed
it into the net for a 2-0 Logger lead.
With the 16-0 shot count in the second half, the Loggers outshot
the Lutes 25-7 in the match on the way to their seventh victory of
the year.
The Loggers head south to take on George Fox on Sunday in
Newberg, Ore. at noon.
