TACOMA, Wash. – The No. 19 ranked University of Puget
Sound women's soccer team won its home opener at East Field
Saturday afternoon, 2-1, against the visiting Carleton Knights.
This was the first meeting between the two teams since Carleton
defeated Puget Sound in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament
back in 2008.
Puget Sound had control of the game for the entire first half and
the first 25 minutes of the second half, scoring both of its goals
in the first 23 minutes of the game. The first goal for the Loggers
came in the 19th minute from junior Jenny Moore (Kent, Wash.).
The second goal was a long shot that went off the Knights
goalkeeper. Christine Isabella, a junior from Salt Lake City, Utah,
put that ball in the net for Puget Sound in the 23rd minute.
Carleton made some great attempts late to get back in the game by
taking six shots in the last 20 minutes. The Knights lone goal of
the game came in the 71st minute by Niki Tomita.
Sophomore Jess Yarbrough (Golden, Colo.) started the game in goal
for the Loggers picking up the win. She made one save. Ana
Calciano, a senior from Farmington, Conn., got the start in the
second half, making two saves.
The Loggers led the way with 11 shots and three on goal. Four
different Loggers each had two shots: freshmen Kylie Beeson
(Everett, Wash.), junior Mikaela Freeman (Alameda, Calif.), senior
Kelly Anderson (Centennial, Colo.) and Moore. Carleton had eight
shots.
Puget Sound plays again on Sunday on the East Field at noon as the
Loggers host St. Thomas.
