Loggers Open NWC With Twinbill Sweep Of Whitman

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

TACOMA, Wash. – The University of Puget Sound baseball team swept a pair of games from Whitman College on Saturday, 6-4 and 13-4. Andrew Grady went 6-for-8 on the day as the Loggers eclipsed the .500 mark for the first time this season.

Game 1 – 6-4

Matt Robinson was once again lights out for the Loggers (4-3, 2-0 NWC) as collected his second win of the year. Robinson tossed eight innings for the Loggers, allowing just six hits and one run. He also fanned a career-high 12 batters in the dominating performance.

Whitman touched up Robinson in the third to break the scoreless tie with an RBI-double down the right field line. Cameron Young stroked the double to put the Missionaries (1-12, 0-2 NWC) up 1-0.

The Loggers bats came to life in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of runs. Matt Cox led off the inning with a single and moved over to second after Chaz Kramer drew a walk. A pair of wild pitches then brought Cox home to tie the game at 1-1.  Will Mentor came through later in the inning with an RBI-single to plate Kramer.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Loggers exploded for four runs. Grady picked up his second hit on the day and plated two runs in the process to extend the Logger lead to 4-1. Grady later came around to score on a Kainoa Correa single and Dakota Resnik capped the scoring in the sixth when he came across the plate on a Whitman error.

As it turned out the Loggers needed those insurance runs as Whitman scratched out three runs in the ninth.  However, Cameron Duvall shut the door on the rally as the Loggers prevailed.

 Game 2 – 13-4

The Logger bats came to life in the second game with Resnik, Christian Carter and Grady all recording multi-hit games. Grady was 4-for-5 in the game with four runs scored and an RBI. Resnik also scored three times and drove in two RBI.

As the Logger bats came to life with a pair of four-run innings in the game. Taylor Volz went to work on the mound. After Volz tossed 5.2 innings of relief to earn the win for the Loggers.

Whitman scored two runs in the first on a Casey Minnick RBI-single and a bases loaded walk to chase the Logger starter. Volz immediately shut the door on the early rally and limited the damage when he entered in the first.

He went on to retire the first seven batters he saw, in order, and retired 15 of the first 16 batters he faced. As Volz dominated on the mound with a pair of Ks, the Logger offense went to work, getting a run back in the bottom of the first and scoring four runs in the second and fourth innings.

After five shutout innings, Whitman finally caught up to Volz with another pair of runs in the seventh. With the Missionaries threatening to close the gap further, Nathan Aguiar took over on the mound and produced an inning-ending ground ball on his first pitch to stop the rally. Aguiar went the final 2.2 innings, allowing just one hit.

The Whitman rally came too little too late as the Loggers had built a 10-2 lead going into the seventh inning. After Whitman's runs in the seventh, the Loggers scratched out three more runs for the eventual final of 13-4.

The Loggers and Missionaries conclude their three-game series tomorrow with a single game at noon.
