Box Score TACOMA, Wash. – The bats stayed hot for the University of Puget Sound baseball team as it completed a three-game series sweep of Whitman with a 12-4 win on Sunday. The Loggers (5-3, 3-0 NWC) used a five-run fifth inning to blow the game open and cruise to victory over Whitman (1-13, 0-3 NWC).
Casey Coberly, Nick Cherniske and Christian Carter each recorded two hits in the game and the Loggers drew 10 walks to key the victory.
The Loggers posted an early 2-0 lead with a run in the first and another in the second. However, a three-run homer from Erik Korsmo in the top of the fourth gave the Missionaries a 3-2 lead.
The Loggers reclaimed the lead in the bottom half as Cherniske was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Carter scored on a balk. Whitman tied the game up in the top of the fifth with another run before the Loggers exploded for five runs.
Nine Loggers came to the plate in the inning. Casey Coberly put the Loggers first run on the board with a triple that scored Matt Cox, who led off the inning with a walk. Addison Melzer cashed in Coberly with a sacrifice fly two batters later to give the Loggers a 6-4 lead. Cherniske stroke a two-RBI double later in the inning and later scored on an error to cap off the Loggers outburst and give them a 9-4.
The Loggers hung up two more runs in the seventh and another in eighth as Luke Englert tossed a near flawless four innings. Englert allowed just one hit and fanned three in four innings of relief to earn the save. Lucas Stone tossed the first five innings to grab the win.
The Loggers will play their first road game against Whitworth next week. The weekend series has been moved to Columbia Basin College in Pasco, Wash. due to the field conditions at Whitworth.
