Loggers Fall Twice In Twinbill At Willamette

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SALEM, Ore. – The University of Puget Sound baseball team was swept in a doubleheader at Willamette today, 9-1 and 10-6. Matt Cox was 5-for-9 with two runs and an RBI on the day for the Loggers (16-17, 14-9 NWC).

Game 1 – L, 1-9

In the early game, Cox supplied the Loggers' lone run in a 9-1 loss to the Bearcats (22-16-1, 12-11 NWC) with a home run in the top of the fourth inning. Cox's solo shot cut the Bearcats early lead in half at 2-1.

However, the Bearcats went on to score in each of the last four innings, including a four-run seventh to run away with the victory.

The Bearcats scored one run in each of the first two frames to take the early 2-0 lead. Max Stepan brought in the first run while Tommy Kawamura brought in the run in the second. Kawamura was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

After Cox's homer in the fourth, the Bearcats pushed across another run in the fifth and another in the sixth for a 4-1 lead. That was more than enough for Brandon Simon, who tossed eight innings for the Bearcats to secure the win.

The Loggers committed four errors in the game with two coming in the seventh inning when the Bearcats pushed across four runs to break the game wide open with an 8-1 lead.

Cox collected half of the Loggers hits in the game, going 4-for-4 with the homer. Jeff Walton added two hits to the Loggers cause.

Game 2 – L, 6-10

The Logger bats came to life in the nightcap but couldn't sustain the early momentum as the Bearcats came back for a 10-6 victory.

The Loggers sprinted out to an early 4-0 lead with four runs in the third. Dakota Resnik came through with an RBI-single and Jeff Walton knocked in two more with a single to left in the inning. The Loggers first run came around on a Bearcat error.

Stepan cut the lead in half with a two-RBI single in the bottom half of the inning to keep the Bearcats in the game.

Paul Webster, who went 2-for-4 in the game, scored in the fourth on another Bearcat miscue and Will Mentor knocked in a run with a single in the fifth. However, Willamette plated two runs in the fourth and another in the fifth to cut the lead to 6-5.

In the seventh, Brandon Chinn brought home the game-tying run. After the Loggers went down in the eighth, the Bearcats exploded for four runs. Stepan hit a bases loaded double to give the Bearcats a 9-6 lead and later scored on a wild pitch.

The Loggers and Bearcats will play the final game of the 2011 regular season tomorrow.  With a win tomorrow, the Logger can lock down second place in the Northwest Conference.
