Box Score PASCO, Wash. – The Puget Sound baseball team opened its 2012 campaign on Friday with a 2-1 loss to Corban in the Swing Into Spring Classic. All three runs were scored in the final three innings but Corban broke through with the winning run in the ninth.
Jeff Walton took the ball in Loggers opener and threw six spectacular innings to keep the Loggers (0-1) in a scoreless game. Walton struck out four and allowed just two hits, retiring 11 consecutive batters from the second to the sixth inning. No Corban (1-0) runner even reached third until the sixth inning.
Eric Lund and Christian Carter put the Loggers in business in the first inning with back-to-back one-out singles. However, Corban was able to escape the jam unscathed.
In the seventh, Lucas Stone put the Loggers on top with the game's first run. Jake Boley, who was pinch running for Walton, scored from second on Stone's single into center.
Corban broke even in the top of the eighth on a Logger wild pitch and scored again in the top of the ninth to secure the win on a sacrifice fly. Jarrod Beiser was charge with the loss after tossing the last 1.2 innings. He did not allow a hit but issued two walks and two Ks.
The Loggers head back out to the diamond tomorrow for a 12:30 p.m. game with Lewis & Clark.
