Loggers Rally Late But Fall Twice To Lutes

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PARKLAND, Wash. – Two late rallies weren't enough to overcome deficits as the Puget Sound baseball team fell twice to Pacific Lutheran. The Loggers (4-17-1, 1-7 NWC) scored all seven of their runs on the day in the ninth inning.

Game 1 – L, 5-15

The Loggers scored all five of their runs in the ninth and the Lutes used a pair of six-run innings to cruise to the win in game one.

Jacob Hoffman and Brock Gates each ended up with four RBI in the game to lead the Lutes. Hoffman helped the Lutes build an early lead with an RBI-single in the third and a two-RBI double in the six-run fourth. Two more double-RBI hits in the fourth accounted for the six runs and built an 8-0 lead.

Gates' four RBI all came on one swing as he hit a grand slam in the eighth to make the score 15-0 in favor of the Lutes.

The Logger bats turned it on in the ninth although it was too late to complete the comeback. Paul Webster put the Loggers on the board with a two-RBI single into left field after the Loggers loaded the bases to open the inning. Tucker Barney doubled in the next at-bat to plat another Logger run. Jeff Walton later hit a sacrifice fly and Andrew Grady came through with a single into center to drive in the final Logger run.

Game 2 – L, 2-8

Once again, the Loggers rallied in the ninth, but an 8-0 hole proved to be too deep to climb out of as the Loggers fell in the late game. The Loggers broke through with a pair of unearned runs in the ninth.

The Loggers loaded the bases in the ninth with one out and the help of a Lute error. Pinch-hitting Connor Savage cashed in on the Lutes miscue as his sacrifice fly brought in the first Logger run. Matt Cox pinch hit in the next at-bat and singled in another run before the Lutes were able to close out the game.

Corey Moore led the Lutes at the plate, going 2-for-3 with four RBI. He had a two-RBI single in the fourth and a two-RBI double in the sixth as part of a pair of Lute rallies. The Lutes scored the pair of runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth to go up 5-0. They added on more in the seventh and two more in the eighth to seal the win.

Lucas Stone went 5.1 innings for the Loggers and cruised through the first three innings. The Lutes first two runs came after a Logger error extended the inning but Stone ran into trouble in the sixth before exiting the game.

Trevor Lubking tossed seven shutout innings to earn the win for the Lutes.

The Loggers and Lutes conclude their series at 1 p.m. tomorrow at PLU.
