Pitcher's Duel Ends In 4-2 Loss For Loggers

Box Score

WALLA WALLA, Wash. – The Puget Sound baseball team came out on the wrong side of a pitcher's duel on Sunday as it lost 4-2 in a hard-fought rubber game at Whitman. The Missionaries (2-13, 2-1 NWC) were able to hold off a late Logger (3-9-1, 1-2 NWC) rally to capture the series win.

Kyle Moyes did most of Whitman's damage with one swing as he hit a three-run homer to left in the fourth that gave the Missionaries a 4-0 lead. Aaron Cohen snuck a single into left field in the previous at bat to score the Missionaries first run.

The Loggers answered back with a pair of runs in the fifth. Jake Boley and Connor Savage smack back-to-back RBI singles to bring home Matt Cox and Christian Carter.

The Loggers threatened again in the eight as Casey Coberly and Will Mentor opened the inning with back-to-back singles. They each advanced on ground out from Matt Cox top put runners on second and third with one out, but Brett Lambert shut the door on the rally and tossed a perfect ninth to pick up the save for Whitman.

Jake Nelson earned his first win with seven innings on the mound. He allowed four hits and both Logger runs.

Lucas Stone tossed four innings for the Loggers, giving up no runs and only two hits through the first three innings. However, Whitman pounded out five hits and four runs in the fourth as Stone ended up with the loss.

Luke Englert kept the Loggers comeback hopes alive as he struck out two and allowed just one hit over the final four innings.

The Loggers return home next week for a three-game NWC series with Whitworth. The series will start with a noon doubleheader on Saturday.
