Loggers Drop Series Finale In Slugfest

Box Score

TACOMA, Wash. – The Puget Sound baseball team came out on the wrong side of a slugfest on Sunday as it fell 13-10 to Lewis & Clark. The Loggers (9-23-1, 5-13 NWC) strung together two five-run innings but the Pioneers (7-30, 4-17 NWC) had 18 hits to come away with the win.

The Loggers started the game on fire at the plate as they scored five runs in the bottom of the first. The first four Loggers reached base safely with Connor Savage and Paul Webster both singling. Casey Coberly walked to load the bases and Will Mentor's single into center plated the first two Logger runs. Kaulana Smith smacked a three-run homer to left field with two outs to make it a 5-0 Logger lead.

The Pios came roaring back in the second with five runs of their own. The first five batters of the inning reached safely and eventually scored to tie the game. After a walk loaded the bases, Logger starter Lucas Stone hit Hayden Higger with a pitch to bring in the first run. Geoff Wertz singled in another run and Eric Hyun's sacrifice bunt drove in one more. A fourth run cam home on a groundout and Michael Ball;s single drove in the fifth run of the inning and tied the game at 5-5.

Ball gave the Pios a 6-5 lead in the fourth with another RBI-single. He drove in another run in the seventh to finish 4-for-6 on the day with three RBI.

A Logger error proved costly in the fifth as the error extended the inning and Lewis & Clark took full advantage by plating four runs for a 10-5 lead. After bringing in two more in the seventh and pushing the lead to 12-5, the Logger bats caught fire again.

Webster singled in Andrew Grady and Mentor was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to plate the first two runs. The next batter, Matt Cox, was also plunked to drive in another Logger run. Smith's grounder drove in another run but Cox was retired at second. A Pio error allowed another run to score before Lewis & Clark was able to stop the rally with a 12-10 lead.

They went on to add an insurance run in the ninth and held the Loggers scoreless over the final two frames to take the series finale.

Mentor and Smith combined for seven RBI for the Loggers while for Pios had multiple RBI.ac

The Loggers head to NWC-leading Pacific next weekend for a three-game series.
