Loggers Sweep Season-Opening Series From St. Martin's

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

TACOMA, Wash. – The Puget Sound baseball team completed a season-opening sweep of NCAA Division II St. Martin's on Sunday with wins of 5-4 and 16-9 in a doubleheader. The Loggers (3-0) came from behind in both games, including a two-run ninth in the early game to sneak out with the win.

Game 1 – W, 5-4

Two runs in the top of the ninth secured a 5-4 win for the Loggers over the Saints. The Loggers entered the final frame trailing for the first time in the series, 4-3.

With two outs and runners on the corners, Connor Savage strode to the plate and singled into right field to bring in the tying run. Kaulana Smith then knocked a 2-2 pitch into left center in the next at-bat to score JB Eary from second and take the 5-4 advantage.

The game-tying hit was the second of the game for Savage while Smith picked up his first hit of the season in a timely spot. Smith also scored two runs in the game.

Lucas Stone picked up the win for the Loggers after tossing three, two-hit innings out of the bullpen. He also struck out six while issuing no walks but hit two batters. Anthony Brady struck out two of the four batters he faced in the ninth to pick up his first save.

One of Stone's hit batters put the Loggers in a 4-3 hole in the seventh. Stone hit Travis Shaw with the bases loaded to bring in the go-ahead run. Shaw had previously played a match game with the Loggers as he drove in all four runs for the Saints.

Savage had left off the game with a single, stole second, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored when the Saints throw to first went wild. Nathan Backes drove in Smith later in the inning for a 2-0 Logger lead. Shaw responded in the bottom of the first with a two-RBI triple to tie up the game.

Backes had another RBI in the fourth for the Loggers when his two-out infield single drove in Smith from third but Shaw again brought the game back to even in the bottom half. He smashed a single up the middle to drive in Jack Freeman.

Game 2- W, 16-9

A high-scoring affair completed the sweep of St. Martin's in the Loggers (3-0) season-opening weekend. The Loggers erased a early five-run deficit and scored multiple runs in four of the last six innings to complete the sweep and capture the 16-9 win.

The high-scoring game came on the back of 11 combined errors in the game. Six of those errors came on the Loggers side and five came from St. Martin's. Of the Saint's (0-3) nine runs, only two were charged as earned runs to Logger pitchers.

Transfer Jesse Schumacher came out of the bullpen in the fourth inning and tossed four innings to earn the win.

Alex Bielaski led the Saints with a 3-fo-4 effort at the plate and three RBI. Chandler Tracy also had a pair of RBI while Blake Lord set the table with three hits and two runs scored.

Connor Savage had another three hits, giving him seven for the weekend while driving in two runs and scoring two more the Loggers. Addison Melzer was 2-for-4 and drove in four runs, including a clutch bases-loaded double that cleared the bases and padded the Logger led to 11-7.

The Saints got on the bard first with five quick runs in the first two frames. A Logger error in each inning contributed to the Saints efforts. The Loggers hung up two in the third but were down 6-2 after the Saints got one back in the bottom half.

Momentum swung around in the fourth as a pair of Saints errors contributed to six Logger runs as the Loggers also pounded out five hits in the frame. The deficit diminished and the Loggers took an 8-6 lead.

The Saints would get one back in the sixth before the Loggers went off for eight runs over the final three innings to put the game and the series away.

The Loggers head out to Pasco, Wash. next week for four games, starting with a 10 a.m. first pitch against Corban on Friday.
