Carter's Three-Run Double Lifts Loggers Over OIT

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PORTLAND, Ore. – Christian Carter came through in the clutch to boost the Puget Sound baseball team to a 3-2 win over Oregon Tech on Saturday. The Loggers improved to 5-3 on the year and Matt Robinson picked up his third win on the mound.

Robinson threw six strong innings to earn the win but it was Carter who delivered the big hit. The Owls (4-6) had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth but the Loggers answered in the bottom half.

With two on and one out, Kaulana Smith drilled a single into center to load the bases for Carter. Carter then turned on a pitch and sent it down the right field line to drive in all three runs for a 3-1 Logger lead.

That would be all the runs the Loggers scored in the game and all they would need. Robinson threw six innings with six strikeouts. He held the Owls off the scoreboard for the first four innings, extending his scoreless innings streak to 18 innings to open the season.

Tyson Dahl snapped Robinson's scoreless streak with an RBI-hit in the fifth and added another one in the sixth for the Owls. He ended with three hits in the game.

Steve Wagar, Jeff Walton and Lucas Stone came out of the bullpen to combine for three shutout innings to preserve the win. Stone pitched the final 1.1 innings to earn the save.

The Loggers are back on the field later today for a nonconference game with NWC foe Willamette.

Game 2 vs. Willamette - L, 0-6

The big hit that came in the day's first game didn't come in the second game as the Loggers (5-4) fell 6-0 to Willamette. Addison Melzer had two hits for the Loggers in the game.

Tanner Oates led the Bearcats (4-4) to the victory with four RBIs in his 2-for-2 performance at the plate. He drove in a run in four straight plate appearances to gain the initial lead and help extend it. Tyson Giza also went 3-for-5 and drove in two runs in the sixth.

The Loggers threatened to score with a runner on third in the third in the third and seventh innings but couldn't push him home. Carter and Nick Funyak each doubled for the Loggers.

Nate Aguiar went six innings in the loss and allowed five runs although only three were earned as two came after an error extended the fifth inning. Steve Wagar tossed the final two innings, striking out three and allowing one run.

Peter Hoffman went the distance for Willamette to record the shutout win.

The Loggers will face Concordia tomorrow at 4 p.m. in the conclusion of the NWC/CCC Challenge.
