Box Score LACEY, Wash. – It couldn't have gone any better for the Puget Sound baseball team in a dominating 12-0 win over NCAA Division II St. Martin's in Saturday's season-opener. Christian Carter and Jeff Walton combined to drive in nine runs while Matt Robinson and Jarrod Beiser combined for the shutout on the mound.
Robinson took the start in the season-opener for the Loggers (1-0) and went seven scoreless innings to earn the win. He allowed just five hits while also striking out five Saints. Beiser finished up the game, allowing just one hit and one walk over the final two innings.
The Loggers started early as
Nathan Backes drove in a run in his first-ever collegiate at bat in the top of the first. However, the big inning came in the second when the Loggers put across five runs.
Walton smacked a two-run homer to left center with one out and four batters later Carter sent a three-run homer over the right field fence for a 6-0 Logger lead.
Three more runs came across in the fourth on a double from freshman Nick Funyak and two-RBI double from Walton. Carter smacked a two-RBI double in the seventh to keep the Loggers rolling and more run came across on a walk in the ninth to complete the scoring.
The Loggers pounded out 19 hits in the game Walton and Carter highlighting four Loggers with three hits. Backes and JB Eary also recorded three hits a piece.
Fourteen of the Loggers hits came against Saints starter Zach Carter. The Saints (0-5) sent five pitchers to the mound in the game after Carter was chased after the fourth inning. Bobby Twedt led the Saints at the plate with two of the Saints' six hits in the contest.
The Loggers and Saints square off again tomorrow in a doubleheader with the first pitch slated for 11 a.m.
