SPOKANE, Wash. – The Puget Sound baseball team fell twice at Whitworth in a doubleheader on Saturday, 4-2 and 8-3. The Loggers (7-8, 2-3 NWC) scored first in both games but couldn't hold off the hosts late in the game.

Game 1 – L, 2-4

Errors led to all four Pirate runs in the game as Whitworth (7-6-1, 2-0 NWC) came out on top of a pitcher's duel in the series-opener. Matt Robinson took his first loss on the mound for the Loggers despite not allowing an earned run.

Robinson went 7.2 innings and struck out eight batters in the loss. He allowed 10 hits and four runs although all four were unearned. He went toe-to-toe with Whitworth pitcher Dan Scheibe, who earned the win and struck out 11 Loggers.

The Loggers committed four errors in the contest that led to the same number of Whitworth runs. The Loggers had taken a lead in the top of the third when Nate Backes singled in Connor Savage from third. An error in the bottom half led to a pair of runs for the Pirates. Gerhard Mulheims and Tyler Pfeffer each had an RBI-hot after the error extended the inning.

The Loggers tied it up in the sixth when Christian Carter scored on a Pirate errorbut two errors in the bottom half led to another Pirate run for a 3-2 lead. They added one more in the eighth after an error had extended the inning.

Four Loggers had multiple hits in the game while Nike Motsinger had three hits to lead the Pirates.

Game 2- L, 3-12

The Pirates exploded for 11 runs over the seventh and eighth to come away with the convincing win. The Loggers had built a 3-1 lead before the Pirates had the two clinching frames.

Christian Carter opened the scoring with a solo homer to lead off the fourth inning for the Loggers. Nick Motsinger then tied up the game at 1-1 with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth.

Bobby Hosmer quickly regained the lead for the Loggers in the sixth. Carter and Nate Backes led off the inning with back-to-back singles an later came around to score on a single off Hosmer's bat.

Jarrod Beiser concluded his solid starting effort in the sixth with another scoreless frame. He left the game in line for the win after tossing six strong innings and allowing just one run on seven hits.

However, Whitworth came storming back in the seventh. Jeremy Druffel changed the game with one swing as he sent a grand slam over the left field fence to gain the lead for the Pirtates for the first time in the game.

The Loggers committed both of their errors in the eighth innings and the Pirates took full advantage as they pushed across seven unearned runs to secure the twinbill sweep.

Jeff Walton took the loss on the mound after tossing 1.2 innings in relief of Beiser. Carter was 4-for-5 at the plate to lead the Loggers and total six hits on the day. Carson Blumenthal threw a complete game to get the win for the Pirates.
