Box Score 2 TACOMA, Wash. – The Puget Sound baseball team played through a rain-soaked doubleheader with No. 17 George Fox on Saturday but only one game came to a conclusion. The Bruins (20-8, 13-3 NWC) took the first game 8-4 and the second game was tied at 4-4 when the game was halted after nine innings due to darkness.
Game 1 – L, 4-8
The Bruins jumped on top early and pulled away late to take the first of a three-game series 8-4. Josh Rapacz had an RBI-single in each of the first two innings to help the Bruins to a 4-0 lead on the Loggers.
Two Logger errors in the first two innings led to a few runs for the visitors. Matt Robinson allowed six runs through six innings although only three were earned.
In the bottom of the sixth the Loggers cut into a 6-0 deficit. Lucas Stone doubled in Connor Savage and later came home when Jeff Walton drew a bases loaded walk. After the walk, the rain became too much and the teams waited through a rain delay.
Out of the delay, a George Fox error allowed one more run to come home and the Loggers trailed just 6-3.
A Christian Carter single plated Savage in the seventh and the Loggers trailed just 6-4. However, Ian Buckles retired the last seven Loggers to come to bat in order to secure the save. He tossed the final 3.1 innings after the rain delay.
A sacrifice fly and another RBI single from Rapacz tallied the Bruins final runs in the eighth. Rapacz was 4-for-4 with four RBIs.
Game 2 (Halted) – T, 4-4
This time the Loggers jumped ahead early with a big first inning. Three walks loaded the bases with two outs. Bobby Hosmer didn't waste the opportunity as he brought home the Loggers' first two runs with a double to right center.
Jeff Walton added an RBI single and the Loggers were up 3-0 out of the gates. An RBI-single from Lucas Stone ran the lead to 4-0 in the second inning.
Stone's single marked the end of the day for the Bruins starter but Eric Kittelson came in and gave a solid effort out of the bullpen. He struck out four through 6.1 inning of relief work and kept the Loggers off the scoreboard.
Meanwhile, the Bruin bats went to work to tie up the game. A leadoff triple in the fourth turned into a quick run after Josh Rapacz singled it in. Kadyn Nannini cashed in Rapacz later to cut the Loggers lead in half.
A Logger error in the seventh extended the inning and the bruins made the most of it as Zach Miller's sacrifice fly cut the lead down to 4-3.
A leadoff double, another Logger error and a base hit from Tim Williams had the game tied at 4-4 and marked the end of the day for Steve Wagar. Wagar struck out seven through seven-plus innings.
Lucas Stone pitched the final two innings before the game was halted and kept the Bruins scoreless to stop a bit of their momentum.
The Loggers had a chance to win it in the ninth. Christian Carter led off with a single and gave way to a pinch runner, Eric Lund. Lund was sacrifice over to second to get in scoring position. With two outs, Bobby Hosmer roped a single into right field but Williams fired a strike from right to catch Lund at the plate, end the inning and send the game into extras.
Extra innings will pick up at 11 a.m. tomorrow and will be followed by the third and final game of the series.
