Loggers win a wild one in 3-2 victory over Linfield

Box Score

TACOMA, Washington – The Puget Sound volleyball team won a wild match at Memorial Fieldhouse on Saturday night as it topped Linfield, 3-2, during Homecoming and Family Weekend.

The Loggers (7-10, 6-2 NWC) were staring at a near-certain loss when they trailed the Wildcats (6-7, 5-3 NWC) 18-17 in the fifth set. Puget Sound head coach Mark Massey called a timeout to rally his team, and the Loggers responded by recording three-straight points to win the set, 20-18, and the match, 3-2 (22-25, 25-18, 25-23, 21-25, 20-18).

Following the timeout, Shawna Smith tallied back-to-back kills, and an attack by the Wildcats sealed the win for the Loggers.

Puget Sound opened the match by taking a 7-1 lead in the first set, forcing Linfield to call a timeout. The Wildcats rallied from the six-point deficit to even the score, 13-13, and they maintained momentum en route to a 25-22 win.

The Loggers bounced back to win the second set, 25-18. A kill by Heather Sangster put Puget Sound ahead, 19-10, and the Loggers staved off a four-point rally by the Wildcats to even the score, 1-1. Puget Sound took a 2-1 lead after it won the third set, 25-23, as a kill by Smith clinched the set and put the Loggers in control. However, the Wildcats responded with a 25-21 win in the fourth set, forcing a decisive fifth set.

The Loggers held the largest lead of the fifth set at 8-5, but the Wildcats evened the score at 14-14. A kill by Nicolette Reynaud put Puget Sound on the brink of victory, but the two sides went point-for-point until Linfield took an 18-17 lead.

Massey's timeout proved to be perfectly timed, as the Loggers rallied for three-straight points and the win.

Moira McVicar finished with a career-best 57 assists, and Emily Convery came away with a season-best 15 kills. Rachael Garrison also finished with a season-high 34 digs.

The Loggers return to the floor when they travel to Whitman on Friday, Oct. 17, for a 7 p.m. match.
