Baseball sweeps doubleheader with Lewis & Clark

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

TACOMA, Wash.— The Puget Sound baseball squad capped off a beautiful day weather-wise at Logger Field with a successful day on the field, taking both games of a scheduled doubleheader against Lewis & Clark in Tacoma, Wash.

Game 1: Puget Sound 7, Lewis & Clark 6

The Pioneers took the early lead, scoring one run in the top of the first inning on an RBI groundout from Corey Davis. They tallied one more in the top of the fourth for a 2-0 lead. In the fifth inning, Lewis & Clark got a leadoff triple from Brad Lezak, who scored on a sacrifice fly from Tommy Massari. Massari reached third base on the sacrifice after Logger left fielder Jeff Walton dropped the long fly ball. He later scored on an RBI single by Hayden Higger. Higger scored on an RBI base knock later in the inning.

Puget Sound's bats woke up in the fifth inning, however, getting four runs on four hits. They loaded the bases for Chris Zerio, who then doubled to right field to bring in Lucas Stone and JB Eary. In the next at bat, Walton made up for his earlier drop with another double, bringing home Zerio and Connor Savage.

Lewis & Clark got one of those runs back in the sixth inning, but Puget Sound wasn't done on the base paths either. In the bottom of the seventh, Walton plated Savage again with a sacrifice fly out to center field. Zerio advanced to second base on the fly out, and he scored when Nathan Backes singled through the left side for an RBI. Two batters later, Nick Funyak brought in the go-ahead run in Backes with a single to left field.

After a scoreless eighth inning, Kian Kurokawa remained in the game in to close for Puget Sound. He got the first out, but allowed a single to Eric Hyun to give the Pioneers a runner. The freshman then got Andrew Traver to ground into a 4-6-3 double play to end the game, clinching the Puget Sound victory.

Jarrod Beiser got the win after throwing 2.0 innings in relief, allowing just one run and striking out one batter. Kurokawa picked up the 2.0 inning save, allowing just two hits. Walton led the team with three RBI on two hits, while three different Loggers reached on two base hits during the first game.

Game 2: Puget Sound 8, Lewis & Clark 4

Puget Sound won game two thanks to a pair of four-run innings. They scored the game's first runs in the third inning, pushing four runners across home plate on four hits and two walks. Nickolas Alarcio led the frame off with a double down the left field line, and Zerio drew a walk to give the Loggers two runners with two outs. A double-steal advanced the pair up 90 feet, and Walton brought them in with a single through the left side. Backes moved Walton up to second base with a single, and another double-steal put the two runners on second and third, respectively. They both scored on wild pitches from Lewis & Clark's John Trupin to give the Loggers a four-run advantage.

The Pioneers scored one in the sixth inning and two in the seventh to come within one run at 4-3, but the Loggers saw another four-run frame in the bottom of the seventh. The first two batters reached base for Puget Sound, and they both scored when Walton hit a ball towards Lewis & Clark's short stop, Jacob Burton. Burton booted the ball into center field where Ben Beck scooped it up, but sent a throw home wide, allowing Stone to score. Another Backes base hit plated Walton, and the Loggers tallied their fourth of the inning when Bobby Hosmer hit a sacrifice fly out to left field, plating Alex Sierra in the process.

Lewis & Clark got one of those runs back in the top of the ninth, but Kurokawa got Evan Gray to fly out to Stone in right field to end the game.

Logger starter Collin Maier got the win, throwing 6.0 innings and allowing just one run while striking out three batters. Kurokawa picked up his second save of the day and fifth of the season, going 2.1 innings while allowing one run and striking out one batter. Walton once again led the team with two RBI and was one of four Loggers to tally two base knocks in the nightcap.

Puget Sound (9-17, 7-10 NWC) will look to sweep the series with Lewis & Clark Sunday, April 13, with the series finale. First pitch for that contest is slated for 12:00 p.m., again on Logger Field in Tacoma.
