Box Score 2 McMINNVILLE, Oregon – The Puget Sound baseball team lost both of its games in the CCC-NWC Challenge hosted by Linfield on Saturday. The Loggers lost to Cordan 3-1, and fell to Linfield, 8-0.
Puget Sound 1, Corban 3
Corban scored all three of its runs in the second inning, but the Loggers were able to get a run back in the fourth inning. Connor Savage (2-for-2, R) led of with a single, and Nickolas Alarcio (2-for-4, 2B) followed with a double down the right-field line to put two runners in scoring position. Chris Zerio (0-for-2) got hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Nathan Backes (0-for-4, RBI) lifted a sac fly to right field for the Loggers' only run.
The Loggers (2-4) got at least one runner in scoring position in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings, but were unable to capitalized. Bobby Hosmer (2-for-4, 2B) hit a two-out double in the seventh, but was stranded on based. In the eighth, James Dejesus (1-for-3) and Savage hit back-to-back singles, but a fielder's choice and fly out ended the scoring opportunity.
Puget Sound 0, Linfield 8
The Loggers committed five errors that led to four unearned runs in a non-conference game between Northwest Conference members.
The Wildcats (5-1) scored three runs in the first inning, aided by a pair of Puget Sound errors in the frame. Layne Croney (2-for-4) nearly put the Loggers on the board with a two-out triple in the second inning, but he wound up stranded on base.
Puget Sound almost got on the board once again after Ben Jones (0-for-2) was hit by a pitch and Cal Muramaru (2-for-3, 2B) followed with a double, but Linfield induced a line out and a ground out to end the threat. Nathan Backes' (1-for-4, 2B) double with a runner on base put two in scoring position with one out in the eighth, but the next two Loggers struck out as the Wildcats preserved the shutout.
Puget Sound officially opens its Northwest Conference schedule with a doubleheader at Lewis & Clark on Saturday, Feb. 21.
