Savage climbs all-time hits list; Loggers lose two at Whitworth

SPOKANE, WashingtonConnor Savage climbed Puget Sound's all-time hits list on Saturday, but the Logger baseball team lost two games at Whitworth. Savaged surpassed head coach Jeff Halstead's 180 career hits (1997-00) to become Puget Sound's No. 2 all-time hitter. Dakota Resnik (2008-11) is the all-time leader with 204 hits.

Puget Sound 4, Whitworth 6

The Pirates (13-8, 7-4 NWC) claimed a 2-0 lead in the second inning, but the Loggers (10-10, 8-4 NWC) evened the score in the fourth. Chris Zerio (2-for-5, R) led off with a single and advanced to second to the left fielder bobbled the ball. A balk allowed Zerio to move to third, and Layne Croney's (1-for-4, RBI) groundout put Puget Sound on the board.

Nick Funyak (2-for-4, RBI) followed with a single and took an extra two bases thanks to another error by the Whitworth left fielder. Johnny Hosmer's (1-for-4, RBI) RBI single tied the game, 2-2.

The Loggers took a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning when Nickolas Alarcio's (1-for-4, 2 RBI) single scored Cal Muramaru (3-for-3, 2 2B, 2 R), who reached base with a double. However, the Pirates scored four runs in the sixth inning and held on for the win.

Puget Sound starting pitcher Collin Maier worked 5.2 innings, and only half of the six runs he allowed were earned.

Puget Sound 2, Whitworth 15

The Loggers took an early 2-0 lead after Savage (2-for-5, 2B, R) led off the first inning with a double Alarcio (1-for-4, R) followed with a single to put runners on the corners with nobody out. Zerio's (1-for-3, RBI) ground out scored Savage and moved Alarcio to second. Nathan Backes' (1-for-3) single put runners on the corers for Bobby Hosmer (1-for-2, RBI), who came through with a sac fly to plate Alarcio and put the Loggers up by two.

The Pirates unleashed an offensive onslaught starting with five runs in the second inning, four in the fifth, and four more in the seventh. The Pirates' 19 hits in the most allowed by Puget Sound this season. 

The Loggers to end the series on a high note with their final game at Whitworth on Sunday, March 22, starting at 12 p.m.
