Box Score SPOKANE, Washington – The Puget Sound baseball team collected at least 10 hits for the 16th time this season, but the Loggers lost at Whitworth on Sunday afternoon, 11-3.
The Pirates grabbed a 1-0 lead after the first inning, and they scored at least one run in every inning except for the second and fourth. Nick Funyak (2-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI) got into scoring position for the Loggers after led off the third inning with a single and moved to second base on Troy Kakugawa's (1-for-3, RBI) sac bunt, but Cal Muramaru (1-for-4) hit a sharp line drive to the shortstop and Funyak was doubled off on the play.
Connor Savage (1-for-4) and Nickolas Alarcio (1-for-4) hit consecutive two-out singles in the sixth inning, and both advanced on a wild pitch. However, the Loggers were unable to come up with the clutch hit to get on the board.
Puget Sound broke through with three runs in the ninth inning. Ben Jones (1-for-1, R), Logan Day (1-for-1, R), and Bobby Hosmer (1-for-4, R) loaded the bases after they each hit singles, and Funyak's double scored two runners. Kakugawa followed with an RBI groundout that scored Hosmer.
The Loggers have a midweek game at crosstown rival Pacific Lutheran on Wednesday, March 25, at 4 p.m.
