TACOMA, Washington – Whitman's eight-run second inning was too much for the Loggers to overcome as the Puget Sound baseball team fell to the Missionaries, 8-5, at home on Sunday afternoon.

Whitman (4-11, 5-8 NWC) managed eight runs on five hits in the second stanza, and it also benefited from five walks and a passed ball. The Loggers (12-12, 10-6 NWC) began to chip away in the home half of the stanza. Kaulana Smith executed a squeeze bunt that scored Bobby Hosmer (2-for-4, R) for Puget Sound's first run. Nick Funyak's  (2-for-4, R, RBI, 2B) RBI double to plate Chris Zerio (2-for-5, R, SB) made it 8-2 in the fifth inning. 

The Loggers rallied for a pair of runs in the sixth. Cal Muramaru (2-for-5, R, 3B) led off with a triple and scored when Connor Savage (2-for-4, R, RBI, 2B) followed with a double. Savage came around to score on Nathan Backes' (1-for-5, R, RBI) single to left field later in the inning. 

Puget Sound loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh inning, and Nickolas Alarcio's (2-for-4, RBI) single to short allowed Funyak to score and cut the deficit to 8-5. 

The Logger pitching staff shut down Whitman for the final seven innings of the game. David Follett, Cole Mauter, Jacob Harris and Joshua Zavisubin combined to yield only four hits through 7.1 scoreless innings.

The Loggers head across Tacoma to take on Pacific Lutheran on Tuesday, March 31, in a non-conference contest. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
