Box Score REDLANDS, California – Collin Maier struck out eight while allowing just two earned runs through 7.2 innings as the Puget Sound baseball team opened its three-game series at Redlands with a 5-3 win on Friday afternoon.
Four Loggers (16-19) finished with multiple hits, and the team's 12 hits marks the 21st time this season they have collected at least 10 in a game.
Maier's dominant performance included striking out the side in the second inning, as all three Bulldogs went down swinging (23-10)
Puget Sound opened the scoring with a four-run third inning. Johnny Hosmer (2-for-4, R, 2B) hit a leadoff single up the middle and James Dejesus (1-for-3, R, RBI, SB) reached on an error by the third baseman, as the miscue allowed Hosmer to score all the way from first.
Connor Savage (2-for-5, R, RBI, 3B) followed with an RBI triple to right-center field, and Nickolas Alarcio (1-for-4, RBI) followed with a sac fly to right field, giving the Loggers a 3-0 advantage. Chris Zerio (2-for-5, R, 2B) then doubled to left-center with the bases empty, and he advanced to third on a groundout by Bobby Hosmer (0-for-4). Nathan Backes (1-for-4, RBI) smacked a single back up the middle for Puget Sound's fourth run of the frame.
The Loggers added another run in fourth inning after Layne Croney (2-for-4, R, 2B) led off with a double and advanced to third on Hosmer's groundout. Dejesus beat out a single to second base as Croney touched home plate to put the Loggers ahead, 5-0.
Redlands got a run in the seventh and two more in the eighth, but David Torigoe shut the door on the Bulldogs by tossing a hitless ninth inning for his second save of the season.
