Loggers end up on wrong side of pitchers' duel at George Fox

NEWBERG, OregonCollin Maier struck out a career-high nine batters through seven innings, but the Puget Sound baseball team lost a pitchers' duel at George Fox on Friday afternoon, 3-1.

Rain washed out a scheduled doubleheader for Friday. The Loggers (12-14, 10-7 NWC) and Bruins (13-6, 8-8 NWC) are tentatively slated to play two on Saturday.

Maier yielded just three runs on five hits and two walks. His stellar performance included striking out the side in the sixth inning, but the sophomore moves to 3-3 on the season with the tough-luck loss.

Layne Croney belted his second home run of the season in the loss. His solo shot to lead off the top of the eighth inning brought Puget Sound to within 3-1. However, George Fox starting pitcher Ian Buckles and reliever Michael Hirko combined to strike out 12 Loggers and allow six hits.

Nickolas Alarcio hit 2-for-4 for the Loggers, marking his 12th multi-hit game of the season.

Puget Sound outhit George Fox, 6-5, and neither team committed an error. The Loggers' defense has been rock solid in recent weeks. Puget Sound has committed has committed either one or no errors in each of the last nine games.
