Puget Sound survives five-set bout at Linfield, 3-2

Box Score

McMINNVILLE, Oregon – The Puget Sound volleyball team nearly let one slip away, but the Loggers survived a Northwest Conference clash and came away with a 3-2  (16-25, 25-20, 27-25, 23-25, 15-9) win at Linfield on Friday night.

The Loggers (5-6, 2-1 NWC) won two of the first three sets and appeared poised to win the fourth set as they held a 19-11 advantage. However, the Wildcats (4-8, 1-2 NWC) clawed back with a 10-2 run that evened the score, 21-21. Linfield scored three consecutive points, but back-to-back kills from Heather Sangster and Katie Rice briefly kept the Loggers' hopes alive before Linfield put away the set's game-winning point.

Despite allowing Linfield to score first in the fifth and decisive set, the Loggers went on a 5-0 run and never looked back. Sangster and Rice tallied kills during the run and Rachael Garrison added an ace while the Wildcats committed two errors.

Emily Convery's  fourth kill gave Puget Sound a 14-9 lead, and Puget Sound won the match on an error by Linfield.

Moira McVicar finished with 38 assists and 16 digs in the winning effort. Rachael Garrison posted a team-high 22 digs, and Sangster led the Loggers with 13 kills.

The Loggers stay on the road for a 7 p.m. match at Willamette on Saturday, Sept. 16.
