Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WALLA WALLA, WashingtonNick Funyak and Nickolas Alarcio while the Puget Sound baseball team totaled 31 runs during its doubleheader sweep at Whitman on Friday. The offensive onslaught yielded the most runs by Puget Sound in a doubleheader since it won both games at Whitman on May 1, 2009, when the Loggers tallied 35 runs.

Puget Sound 15, Whitman 6

The Loggers scored eight unanswered runs and Nick Funyak hit his second home run of the season en route to a 15-6 victory over Whitman in the first game on Friday's doubleheader.

The Missionaries held a 4-3 lead through four innings when the Loggers rallied for three runs in the top of the fifth. Cal Muramaru led off with a walk and proceeded to steal both second and third base. Chris Zerio's single to centerfield tied the game, and the Logger second baseman soon stole second. Funyak drew a walk, and consecutive balks allowed Zerio to score as Funyak took third.

An RBI single by James Dejesus capped the fifth-inning rally.

The Loggers added to their lead with two runs in the sixth. Zerio delivered another RBI single, and Nathan Backes hit a sac fly that allowed Ian Hughes to score.

Hughes and Zerio accounted for all three of Puget Sound's three runs in the seventh inning. Hughes smacked a two-run triple to give the Loggers a 10-4 lead, and Zerio immediately followed with an RBI triple of his own.

The Loggers put the game well out of reach in the eighth inning. Cal Muramaru hit a two-run single, Hughes had an RBI base hit of his own, and Zerio stayed hot with an RBI double.

Funyak's home run gave the Loggers a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Zerio finished the game 5-for-6 with four RBI.

Puget Sound starting pitcher Collin improved to 4-3 after allowing just three earned runs through seven innings.

Puget Sound 16, Whitman 9

Nickolas Alarcio belted his team-leading fourth home run in the first inning as the Loggers continued to keep their foot on the gas during a 16-9 win in the second game of Friday's doubleheader.

Cal Muramaru led off the game with a double, and Alarcio's shot gave the Loggers an early 2-0 lead. Whitman quickly bounced back with three runs in the home half of the opening stanza, but the Logger bats were nowhere near cooling off.

A double by Connor Dunn followed by Muramaru's RBI single evened the score, 3-3, in the second inning. The Loggers got three runs in the third inning, including RBIs by both Dunn and Muramaru.

Both Hughes and Ryan Darrow drove in runs with sacrifices in the fourth inning, and James Dejesus two-run double highlighted a three-run fifth inning.

The Loggers and Missionaries conclude the three-game series on Saturday, March 26, at 12 p.m.
