Box Score WALLA WALLA, Washington – Nathan Backes clobbered his fourth home run of the season as the Puget Sound baseball team completed a three-game sweep at Whitman with a 12-4 victory on Saturday afternoon.
Backes hit a two-out, two-run home run to even the score, 3-3, in the fourth inning. Nick Funyak, the preceding batter, reached base with a double.
The Loggers scored nine runs in the eighth inning to put the game well out of reach. The big rally is the most runs scored by Puget Sound in an inning this season.
Ben Jones led off with the eighth with a double and moved 90 feet from home following a sac bunt by Connor Dunn. Cal Muramaru drew a walk and stole second, and Nickolas Alarcio took four balls to load the bases.
Chris Zerio and Funyak earned consecutive bases-loaded walks for the firs two runs of the inning. Backes, Ian Hughes, and James Dejesus followed with three-straight RBI singles. Batting for the second time in the inning, Dunn hit a two-run double, and Muramaru hit an RBI single.
Backes and Dunn finished with three RBI apiece, while Funyak and Dejesus both went 3-for-4 with two runs.
The Loggers return home to host George Fox for three games next weekend, starting with a 12 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, April 2.
