Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

TACOMA, Washington – Junior starting pitcher Collin Maier had the best outing of his collegiate career, and senior catcher Nick Funyak totaled five RBIs as the Puget Sound baseball team won both ends of a double header over Pacific at Logger Baseball Field on Saturday afternoon.

Puget Sound 5, Pacific 3

Collin Maier tossed eight shutout innings set a new personal record with 10 strikeouts while allowing only five hits and two walks. Maier matched his career-best ninth strikeout in the seventh inning, and he saved his 10th strikeout for the final out of the eighth inning.

The Loggers (6-9, 4-4 NWC) and Boxers (7-9, 4-4 NWC) were locked in a scoreless tie through 4.5 innings when Puget Sound struck for two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Ian Hughes led off with a single and James Dejesus reached base on a throwing error by the catcher after he laid down a sac bunt. Cal Muramaru moved the runners one base each with a sac bunt, and Chris Zerio drew a walk to load the bases.

Nick Funyak stepped to the dish and delivered a two-run single to give Puget Sound the lead. The Loggers got two more runs in the sixth inning when Nickolas Alarcio, who reached base after getting hit by a pitch, scored on a passed ball. James Dejesus knocked in Ben Jones with an RBI single go push the Loggers' lead to 4-0.

Pacific rallied for three runs in the ninth, but Michael Warnick shut the door by inducing a game-ending groundout.

Puget Sound 8, Pacific 5

The Loggers didn't need a hit to break a 5-5 tie in the bottom of the seventh inning. Chris Zerio and Nick Funyak led off with consecutive walks, and Nathan Backes advanced both runners with a sac bunt. Nickolas Alarcio followed with a hard-hit grounder that the Boxers' first baseman misplayed. Funyak and Zerio capitalized on the error as both touched home plate on the play.

A groundout by Ben Jones allowed Alarcio to take second, and the right fielder moved to third on a wild pitch. Ian Hughes hit a groundball to short, but the shortstop's throw skipped by the first baseman, allowing Alarcio to score and give the Loggers an 8-5 lead.

Kian Kurokawa earned his second save the year with a perfect ninth inning that included two strikeouts. Merle Rowan-Kennedy got the win after throwing 1.2 hitless innings out of the bullpen.
