Sierra homers as Loggers beat Lutes in 2016 home finale

Box Score

TACOMA, WashingtonAlex Sierra belted his first home run of the year as the Puget Sound baseball team came away with a 9-6 non-conference victory over Pacific Lutheran in the Loggers' final home game of 2016.

Puget Sound (15-18) was trailing 5-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning when Sierra launched a solo shot to left field. The homer sparked the Loggers' come-from-behind win.

The Loggers loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth inning on three consecutive free passes. Nickolas Alarcio and Nathan Backes both drew four balls, and Ben Jones was hit by a pitch. Sierra was then hit by a pitch to force Alarcio home. Jack Gries stepped to the plate with the bases still full, and the freshman catcher ripped an offering to left field for a three-run double.

Puget Sound added to its 7-5 lead with two runs in the sixth. Jones hit a sac fly to score Chris Zerio, and Gries came through once more with an RBI single that plated Backes.

The Loggers head to southern California for a three-game series at Occidental starting on Saturday, April 16.
