Box Score 2 SPOKANE, Washington – Collin Maier tossed a complete game as the Puget Sound baseball team opened its three-game series at No. 19 Whitworth with a 6-1 win. The Loggers dropped the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, 10-8.
Puget Sound 6, Whitworth 1 (box)
Collin Maier hurled his first complete game of the season and five different Loggers drove in a run en route to 6-1 upset over the No. 19 Pirates. Maier allowed just five hits, one walk, one earned run, and struck out six for his fifth victory of the year.
Whitworth opened the scoring with a run in the second inning, but the Loggers answered right back in the third. Cal Muramaru reached base with a one-out walk, and he eventually came around to scored thanks to two errors by the Pirates. Whitworth committed four errors overall, while Puget Sound played a clean game defensively.
Nick Funyak and Matt Shelhamer hit consecutive singles in the sixth stanza, and Nathan Backes followed with an RBI double to give the Loggers' a 2-1 lead. James Dejesus' single that scored Shelhamer cushioned Puget Sound's lead. Backes is two RBI shy of becoming Puget Sound's No 3 all-time leader.
Nickolas Alarcio doubled in the seventh inning, and Funyak smacked a double of this own to push the advantage to 4-1. The Loggers plated two runs in the ninth thanks to RBIs from Alarcio and Chris Zerio.
Puget Sound 8, Whitworth 10 (box)
Ryan Darrow hit his first home run of the season, and Alex Sierra went long for the second time, but the Loggers' comeback bid fell short, 10-8, against the Pirates.
Whitworth grabbed a 4-0 lead in the second inning, but Puget Sound made a furious comeback bid by scoring six unanswered runs late in the game.
The Loggers trailed, 10-2, entering the seventh inning, but Puget Sound rallied for three runs in the frame. James Dejesus drew a two-out walk and Darrow followed with a double. Zachary Wogan scored both runners with a single, and Sierra knocked in the final run of the inning with a double.
In the ninth inning, Ryan Moyes and Layne Croney singled before Sierra's three-run shot.
Darrow cleared the fences with a solo shot in the third inning for the Loggers' first run of the game.
