Puget Sound lost the rubber match against PLU, 1-0

Box Score

TACOMA, Washington – Puget Sound starting pitcher Tyler Huling threw 6.1 strong innings, but the Loggers lost the rubber match of a three-game series against Pacific Lutheran, 1-0, on Logger Field Sunday afternoon.

Huling allowed just one earned run, which did not come without a bit of controversy. The Lutes (4-3, 2-1 NWC) loaded the bases with one in the seventh inning when Brett Johnson stepped to the plate. The right fielder hit a ground ball up the middle that was scooped up by Logger shortstop Connor Dunn.

Dunn stepped on second base for the inning's second out, and he fired to first in time to beat the runner for what appeared to be an inning-ending double play. However, the umpires huddled and concluded that Dunn's throw pulled first baseman Ian Hughes off the bag. Johnson was ruled safe on the play, which permitted the game's only run.

James Dejesus went 2-for-4 for the Loggers (4-6, 1-2 NWC). The centerfielder smacked a two-out double in the first inning and moved to third base on a passed ball, but the Loggers left Dejesus stranded in scoring position. Dejesus led off the home half of the sixth inning with a single, but was thrown out on the bases when Corey Roberts grounded into a double play.

The Loggers prepare for a non-conference series at Claremont-M-S starting with a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 25, at 11 a.m.
