Zavisubin sharp on mound, but errors costly in 6-0 loss

Box Score

CLAREMONT, CaliforniaJoshua Zavisubin was sharp on the hill, but the Puget Sound baseball team dropped its 2017 season-opener at Pomona-Pitzer, 6-0.

Zavisubin, who made five starts on the mound in 2016, allowed just two earned runs through 5.1 innings. The junior struck out four and walked one, but the Loggers' (0-1) two errors in the third inning proved to be costly.

Pomona-Pitzer took a 2-0 lead in the third inning when Adam Hinthorne began the frame by reaching base on an error. Hinthorne moved into scoring position following a sacrifice bunt, and Tanner Nishioka reached base on a throwing error that gave the Sagehens runners on second and third. Bryce Rogan and Cade Hulse followed with consecutive RBI singles.

Puget Sound immediately threatened to put a crooked number on the board. James Dejesus led off the top of the fourth inning with a single, and he stole second base with one out. Ian Hughes' groundout to first base moved Dejesus to third, but Alex Wojtysiak struck out to end the stanza.

The Loggers and Sagehens continue their three-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 4, starting at 11 a.m.
