Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

TACOMA, WashingtonJoshua Zavisubin tossed a complete game and Jack Gries homered as the Puget Sound baseball team opened its Senior Weekend with a doubleheader split against Whitworth on Logger Field Saturday afternoon.

Puget Sound 3, Whitworth 1

Joshua Zavisubin hurled his first complete game of the season as the Loggers (13-24) opened the three-game series against Whitworth with a 3-1 win.

Zavisubin allowed just three hits and an earned run to go along with five strikeouts for his second win of the year. The Pirates (23-17) mustered just one hit in the second, sixth, and ninth innings.

Puget Sound gave Zavisubin early support with two runs in the second inning. Jack Gries led off with a double to centerfield, and Layne Croney dropped a sac bunt that was misplayed by the pitcher, allowing two runners on base with nobody out.

Alex Wojtysiak followed with an RBI single to left field, and Rizardo Barraza's double down the left-field line plated Croney to put the Loggers ahead, 2-0.

Jack Gries launched a solo home run – his first of the year – with two outs in the second inning.

Puget Sound 1, Whitworth 2 (11 inn.)

The Loggers played into extra innings for the third time this season, but Puget Sound lost to Whitworth, 2-1, in 11 frames.

The Loggers trailed, 1-0, through 5.5 innings, but they evened the score in the bottom of the sixth inning. Ryan Moyes led off with a single to left field, and AJ Koch followed with an infield single. Cal Muramaru was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Makoa Mau grounded into a fielder's choice that allowed Moyes to score the tying run.

Puget Sound squandered a good scoring opportunity in the eighth inning. Cal Muramaru led off with a single, and he moved into scoring position on Mau's sac bunt. A wild pitch allowed Muramaru to take third base with one out, but the Pirates quickly put away two outs to get out of the inning unscathed.

Puget Sound starting pitcher Merle Rowan-Kennedy allowed just one run through six innings, and Joe Brennan took the tough-luck loss after allow just one run in 4.1 innings.

The Loggers conclude their 2017 against the Pirates on Sunday, April 30, at 12 p.m. Before the first pitch, Puget Sound will honor its nine senior student-athletes: Eric Crispell, Layne Croney, Ryan Darrow Ian Hughes, Kian Kurokawa, Ehn Nishioka, Javin Nohara, Matt Shelhamer, Alex Wojtysiak.
