Brennan, Mau blank Boxers in doubleheader victories

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

TACOMA, Washington – Joe Brennan hurled seven shutout innings, and Makoa Mau tossed eight shutout innings as the Puget Sound baseball team kept Pacific off the scoreboard in both games of a Northwest Conference doubleheader on Logger Field Saturday afternoon.

Before the games, Puget Sound held a moment of silence to remember former head coach Ken Garland, who passed away Friday evening.

Puget Sound 9, Pacific 0

Joe Brennan allowed just three hits, walked four, and struck out four through seven innings as the Loggers beat the Boxers, 9-0, in the first game Saturday.

Hunter Riley got the scoring started with a two-run single in the first inning, and Jack Gries delivered an RBI double in the second inning to push the lead to 3-0. Gries tacked on another RBI in the sixth inning with a single that scored Nolan Wiler to put the Loggers up 5-0.

Gries finished the game 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, and Cal Muramaru went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and a run. Riley went 2-for-5 at the plate with two RBI and two runs.

Puget Sound 5, Pacific 0

Makoa Mau, the reigning NWC Pitcher of the Week, allowed just four hits and struck out five through eight shutout innings as the Loggers finished the doubleheader with a 5-0 win.

Once again, the Loggers struck in the first inning thanks to a Nick Ultsch double that scored Cal Muramauru. An RBI triple by Jack Gries in the fifth inning gave the Loggers a two-run run cushion, and Cal Muramaru immediately followed with a run-scoring double.

Mason Quinlan belted a triple – missing a home run by 12 inches – in the eighth inning, and he came in to score on a single by Ultsch.

Muramaru finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate, while Gries, Ultsch, and Kyle Strash each finished with a pair of hits.

The series concludes Sunday, March 18, at 12 p.m.
