Box Score TACOMA, Washington – Nick Ultsch belted a first-inning grand slam as the Puget Sound baseball team picked up a big Northwest Conference win at Pacific Lutheran, 10-8, Monday afternoon. The contest was a make-up game from February.
Kyle Strash opened the game with a leadoff double, and the next batter, Ricardo Barraza, was hit by a pitch. Jack Gries singled to load the bases, and Ultsch belted his team-leading fourth home run to give the Loggers (15-14, 9-9 NWC) a 4-0 lead.
Puget Sound had an even bigger inning in the third, tacking on five runs in the stanza. Gries led off with a single, and Ultsch drove him home with a triple. Hunter Riley's single scored Ultsch, and Riley came in to score later in the inning thanks to an RBI single by Connor Dunn.
James Dejesus' two run-single with the bases loaded capped off the big third inning.
Dakota Marley earned the victory for Puget Sound – his second of the season.
With the win, Puget Sound finds itself in a four-way tie for the fourth final seed to qualify for the NWC Tournament.
The Loggers are scheduled for a non-conference game at NCAA D-I Seattle University, Wednesday, April 4, at 7 p.m.
