Loggers lose close one in Parkland, 5-4

PARKLAND, Washington – Although the Puget Sound baseball team outhit Pacific Lutheran, the Loggers came up short against the Lutes, 5-4, in a non-conference game Tuesday afternoon. 

The Loggers (2-8) totaled seven hits to the Lutes' (7-4) six. The top three spots in Puget Sound's lineup accounted for five hits, including three doubles. Leadoff hitter Kyle Strash went 1-for-2. After coming in to pinch-hit for Strash, Sean Rooney went 1-for-3 with a double.

Batting second, Jack Gries went 1-for-2 with an extra-base hit. His replacement, Tyler Mick, finished the game 1-for-3 at the plate. The No. 3 batter, Mason Quinlan, extended his hitting streak to nine games by going 1-for-1 at the dish. Quinlan increased his batting average to a team-best .343. 

The Loggers were in a 5-2 deficit entering the later innings, put they put a run on the board in both the eight and ninth frames. Nolan Wiler led off the eighth inning by reaching base on an error, and he moved up to second when Jacob Ota drew a walk. A sacrifice bunt by RJ Quirante put two runners in scoring position, and Wiler came in to score on a wild pitch.

In the ninth inning, Rooney hit a one-out double, and he reached home following a fielding error off the bat of Jake Brady

The Loggers resume their Northwest Conference season with a three-game series at George Fox, starting March 2.
