WHITTIER, California – One-run games continue to stifle the Puget Sound baseball team as Whittier won both ends of a doubleheader, 5-4 and 6-5 (10 inn.), in non-conference action Saturday afternoon. Puget Sound 4, Whittier 5

Kyle Strash went 4-for-4 with a double and two RBI, but the Poets fended off a late Logger rally to win, 5-4.

The Loggers (3-15) opened the game by taking a 1-0 lead in the first thanks to a Strash RBI single that scored Jack Gries. Tied 1-1 entering the third inning, Gries opened the stanza with a double, and he took third on a wild pitch. Strash knocked in Gries with another RBI single. Following a Nick Ultsch double, Corey Roberts lifted a sacrifice fly to score Strash.

The lead was short-lived, as Whittier struck for three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Dow by two runs in the ninth, Sean Rooney reached base with a single, and he later came around to score on an error.

Puget Sound 5, Whittier 6 (10 inn.)

Five Loggers totaled multiple hits, including Sean Rooney's first home run, but the Poets got away with a 6-5 win in 10 innings.

Jack Gries, Rooney, Kyle Stash, Corey Roberts, and Nolan Wiler each collected two hits for the Loggers. Gries smacked two doubled, and Roberts also came away with a double.

Freshman starting pitcher Davis Miller continued to shine for the Logger, as he allowed only two earned runs through six innings.

Puget Sound took a 4-0 lead in the third inning, highlighted by a two-run homer from Rooney. Clayton Waltz led off with a walk and Wiler followed with a single. A sacrifice bunt by Jackson Bolitho put two runners in scoring position, and Waltz came in to score on a ground out by Gries.

With Wiler on base, Rooney cleared the fences to give the Loggers a 3-0 edge. After a single by Roberts, Jake Brady hit an RBI double to cap off the rally.

The Loggers couldn't hold on to their two-run lead in the ninth inning, and the Poets walked off in the 10th.

The Loggers have a single game at Occidental Sunday, March 17, at 11 a.m.
