Box Score WHITTIER, California – The top of the Loggers' lineup did damage as the Puget Sound baseball team won its 2020 season-opener, 8-6, at Whittier Friday afternoon.
The Loggers' (1-0) one-through-three hitters combined to go 6-for-13 at the dish with five runs scored. Kyle Strash and Hunter Riley both went 2-for-5, and Mason Quinlan finished the game 2-for-3.
Matthew Hicks earned the win by throwing 2.1 shutout innings in relief of starter Davis Miller.
Ricardo Barraza totaled three RBIs on the day. His first two gave the Loggers a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning when he ripped a double to score both Riley and Quinlan.
The Poets (0-1) made it one-run game through six innings, 4-3. However, the Loggers' bats came back to life in the seventh inning. Makoa Mau and Strash led off with consecutive singles, and both scored on a double by Riley. After a Quinlan single, Corey Roberts picked up an RBI with a single of his own. Later in the inning Barraza lifted a sac fly that allowed Quinlan to score.
Puget Sound has a doubleheader at La Verne Saturday, Feb. 8, starting at 11 a.m.
