Box Score PUYALLUP, Washington – Typically known for its superior passing offense, the Puget Sound football team dominated on the ground in a 20-3 victory at Pacific Lutheran Saturday night in Sparks Stadium.
Saturday's victory marks the first since 1963 that the Loggers beat PLU twice in one season.
Duncan Varela ran for 131 yards on just 20 carries in the second game against the Lutes. In the season opener (Feb. 6) against PLU, Varela ran for 132 yards.
Just as the first game against PLU, Varela totaled three touchdowns in the second go-round. He ran for one score, and he caught both of Murdock Rutledge's touchdown passes.
Silas Washington was also a big part of the Loggers' offense. He ran for 122 yards on 12 carries, a good chunk of which came on a 55-yard tote.
The Lutes' only points of the game were a from a field-goal in the first quarter. The last time Puget Sound kept an opponent from scoring a touchdown was during the 2015 season, when the Loggers beat PLU, 6-2.
Alex Meadowcroft came away with interception Saturday night, and Scott Poetzinger recorded two tackles for a loss. The Loggers have now won four consecutive games against PLU.
The Loggers' season concludes March 6, at home against Whitworth.
