Box Score 2 TACOMA, Washington – The Puget Sound baseball team closed out its 2021 season-opening weekend by winning both ends of a home doubleheader against Whitworth to sweep the Pirates in three games.
Puget Sound 4, Whitworth 3
Jonas Kim hit a two-run homer and Owen Shellhammer struckout six through six shutout innings to lead the Loggers to victory in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader.
Puget Sound held a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning thanks to a couple of sac-fly RBIs by Kyle Strash. Following the latter of those sacrifices, Kim stepped to the plate with Davis Miller on third base, and the Logger right fielder belted his first home run of the season over the left field fence.
Dylan Joyce earned the save by inducing three consecutive fly outs in the ninth inning.
Kim finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate, and Miller went 2-for-3 with a couple of runs scored.
Puget Sound 9, Whitworth 4
Dylan Joyce, Mitchell Nabeta, and Jackson Bolitho each collected two hits as the Loggers sealed the sweep against Whitworth.
The Loggers took a 2-1 lead in the second inning thanks to Jesse Awa's two-run double that scored AJ Morioka and Joyce. The two runners had reached base with consecutive singles.
Bolitho broke a 3-3 tie in the seventh inning by delivering a two-run single in the seventh inning. Whitworth handed the Loggers a couple more runs in the stanza with a balk and a wild pitch.
Jackson Dinkel earned the win for the Loggers by striking out three in 1.1 innings out of the bullpen.
Puget Sound next plays at Pacific Lutheran Friday, March 5.
