TACOMA, Washington – Four hundred and forty-eight days. That's how long it will have been since the Puget Sound football team's last game when the Loggers kickoff against Pacific Lutheran Saturday, Feb. 6, at 12 p.m. in Baker Stadium.
FANS AND FAMILY ARE NOT PERMITTED TO ATTEND ATHLETIC EVENTS
After posting a 6-4 record in 2019, the Logger program was excited to take the next step in the fall of 2020. That excitement was put on pause when Puget Sound had to learn how to overcome new obstacles.
Although the 2020 fall competitive season was delayed, the Loggers were permitted to practice as they followed university, county, state, and federal guidelines during the pandemic. That opportunity led up to a four-game season in the spring of 2021.
Puget Sound will compete only against Northwest Conference opponents based in Washington – PLU and Whitworth. The Loggers head to Spokane, Washington to take on the Pirates, Feb. 13. Following a bye week, Puget Sound makes the short drive to Parkland, Washington for a second bout with the Lutes. The season ends March 6 against Whitworth in Baker Stadium.
The Loggers will celebrate their senior class this Saturday. The event will be live streamed starting at 11:45 a.m. The Class of 2021 includes Anthony Ball, Hayden Baumann, Peter Ciari, Noah Cohen, Douglas Craig, Michael Girardin, AJ Grijalva, Cole Grismanauskas, Ryan Hickey, Matt Marengo, Max McLoughlin, Zack Meyer, Scott Poetzinger, Jackson Posadas, Murdock Rutledge, and Duncan Varela.
Puget Sound's last game against PLU was an historic affair. The Loggers toppled the Lutes, 45-23, in Baker Stadium. It was the first time the Loggers won consecutive games against the Lutes since 1978-79. The 45 points scored was Puget Sound's highest-ever point total in the storied rivalry against PLU.
Rutledge threw for 435 yards and five touchdowns in that memorable win, while Varela rushed for 81 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. Marengo had three catches for 52 yards and touchdown.
By the end of the 2019 season, Rutledge, Varela, Meyer, and Girardin were among the 12 Loggers who received All-Northwest Conference honors.
