PARKLAND, Wash. - In yet another chapter of one of the closest
and most competitive rivalries in the Northwest Conference, the
Puget Sound Loggers and Pacific Lutheran Lutes battled on the pitch
and after 90 minutes, it was the Lutes who collected the 1-0 win to
break a seven match winless streak against the Loggers in a
Northwest Conference men's soccer match on Wednesday afternoon at
PLU Soccer Field in Parkland, Wash.
The teams battled in the first half of the loosely-officiated
match as neither team was able to get off a shot that could sneak
past the opposing keeper. PLU had a 6-4 advantage in shots in
the first period as the Loggers, who are the least-penalized team
in the NWC, were whistled for five fouls, compared with just
three for the Lutes.
In the second half, the Lutes finally broke the scoreless tie in
the 56th minute when Andy Hyres pulled the ball back
following a pass from Ryan Hanna and fired a shot into the
upper right corner of the net, just past the fingers of a diving
Greg Saetrum (Boise, Idaho/Timberline). The Logger offense
kept playing hard and had some opportunities near the net but the
Lute defense used two team saves as well as a good effort from
Daniel Magnum to keep the ball out of the net.
Despite the goal allowed, Saetrum had an outstanding day in net
for the Loggers, making eight saves on the day.
The Loggers and Lutes will square off again next Wednesday on
Peyton Field at Baker Stadium but not before Puget Sound travels
down to Willamette on Saturday for a NWC match with the
Bearcats. Game time in Salem, Ore. is set for 2:30 p.m.
following the women's game between the same two schools.
