TACOMA, Wash. - Junior guard Claire Ely (Walnut Creek,
Calif./Northgate) went off for 20 points and senior post Karen
Chase (Yakima, Wash./West Valley) collected the double-double as
the Puget Sound Loggers cruised past the Warner Pacific Knights,
65-42, in a non-conference women's basketball game on Tuesday
evening at Henry Foss High School in Tacoma, Wash.
The Loggers built their lead early in the first half and were
aided by a cold-shooting Knights team. Warner Pacific went
nearly eight minutes between baskets in the first period, allowing
the Loggers to build an 18-point lead as Puget Sound took a 28-15
lead into the halftime break.
In the second half, the Knights shot slightly better, making
34.6% of their shots, but the Loggers made 50% of their second half
attempts to push the lead to 31 at one point before settling for
the 65-42 victory. The 42 points scored by the Knights is the
lowest total for a Logger opponent since a 67-40 win over Linfield
on Jan. 11, 2008.
The Loggers were led by the 20 points from Ely, who also added
seven steals and give assists on the game. Chase ended with
15 points and 11 rebounds while freshman Jocelyn Riordan (Lake
Forest Park, Wash./Shorecrest) also added 15 in the win. The
Loggers forced 12 steals on the game and put up three total blocks.
Warner Pacific was led by 18 points off the bench from Bethany
Baumann. The Knights turned the ball over 29 times, compared
with 18 for the Loggers.
Puget Sound will be back in action on Dec. 5 when they travel to
Hayward, Calif. to take on Cal State East Bay.
