HAYWARD, Calif. - In a game featuring just 83 combined points,
the Puget Sound Loggers found themselves on the winning end of a
defensive battle with the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs, 47-36, in a
non-conference women's basketball game on Saturday evening at Cal
State East Bay in Hayward, Calif.
The Loggers (4-2) took the early lead by scoring the game's
first 14 points to hold the 14-0 lead with 12:15 to go in the first
half. The Slugs finally got a basket at the 11:06 mark on a
jumper by Kayleigh Calandri but Puget Sound continued to hold back
UCSC to take a 20-13 halftime advantage. The Loggers made
just seven-of-24 attempts in the first half to shoot 29.2-percent
but the Slugs were even cooler, making just four-of-15 attempts for
26.7%.
In the second half, the Loggers pushed the lead back into
double-digits and didn't look back. Puget Sound
improved their shooting a bit in the second period, making
eight-of-21 attempts from the field while the Slugs made
eight-of-24 attempts for 33.3-percent in the final period.
The Loggers were led by 11 points from Karen Chase (Yakima,
Wash./West Valley), who also added seven rebounds in the
game. Natasha Ludwig (Hilo, Hawaii/Waiakea) added 10 points
to go with a team-high eight rebounds. Puget Sound forced 26
UCSC turnovers, collecting 15 steals, including five by junior
guard Claire Ely (Walnut Creek, Calif./Northgate).
The Slugs were led by nine points from Calandri. Danielle
Mofsowitz came off the bench to add seven in the low-scoring loss.
The Loggers will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel
down to Olympia to take on The Evergreen State College.
Tip-off with the Geoducks is set for 6:00 p.m.
