PARKLAND, Wash. - Hitting the road for the first time in 2009,
the Puget Sound Loggers struggled to get going offensively, falling
to the Pacific Lutheran Lutes, 69-36, in a Northwest Conference
women's basketball game on Tuesday evening at Olson Auditorium in
Parkland, Wash.
The rainy weather outside seemed to make its way into the gym as
both teams had a tough team holding on to the ball early.
After 13 combined turnovers in the first ten minutes, both teams
got a better grip as the Lutes began to pull away. The
Loggers struggled offensively, shooting just 20.7% in the first
period but it was a late run by PLU, 10-2, gave Pacific Lutheran a
36-15 lead heading into the break.
The Lutes continued to stay hot in the second half, scoring the
period's first six points before the Loggers finally got on the
board at the 16:44 mark on a free throw by Natasha Ludwig (Hilo,
Hawaii/Waiakea). Unfortunately, the Loggers couldn't find a
way back as the Lutes ran away with the game by a final of 69-36.
Puget Sound was led by 10 points and 11 rebounds from Karen
Chase (Yakima, Wash./West Valley). Freshman Jocelyn Riordan
finished with eight points as the Loggers shot 21.1% from the field
in the game.
The Lutes were led by 11 points and 14 boards from Emily
Voorhies. Trinity Gibbons also added 11 while Melissa Pixler
finished with 10 points on the night.
The Loggers next take the court on Saturday night when they
travel to Newberg, Ore. to take on 14th-ranked George Fox.
Tip-off with the Bruins is set for 6:00 p.m. at Morse Athletic
Center in Newberg.
