OLYMPIA, Wash. - The youth movement did their best to pace the
Puget Sound Loggers on Thursday night but it was the older
Evergreen State Geoducks who collected a 46-45 victory in a
non-conference women's basketball game at The Green House in
Olympia, Wash.
The youthful Loggers (1-1) struggled a bit offensively in the
first half, shooting just eight-for-32 from the field, but the
defense stepped up their game, forcing 12 turnovers from the older
Geoducks, who feature nine upperclassmen on their roster.
Puget Sound, who has nine freshman or sophomores on their roster,
battled their way to a 20-20 tie after the first 20 minutes.
Leading the way was sophomore Jocelyn Riordan (Lake Forest Park,
Wash./Shoreline) who provided nearly half of the Logger offense
with nine points and five rebounds in the first half.
In the second half, Puget Sound stepped up their game
offensively, improving their shooting nearly 10% after making
eight-of-23 shots, but more importantly, the Loggers took care of
business on the charity stripe, making seven-of-nine attempts for
77.8%. Unfortunately for the Loggers, the Geoducks found
their shot during halftime as well, shooting 45.8% in the final
period to sneak past Puget Sound, 46-45.
The Loggers were led by 12 points and six rebounds from both
Riordan and freshman Kelsey McKinnis (Ashland, Ore.). Claire
Ely (Walnut Creek, Calif./Northgate) chipped in eight points to go
with four assists and four steals. Puget Sound finished the
game with 14 steals on 23 Geoduck turnovers.
Evergreen was led by 16 points from Latrina Woods. Alex
Saab added 10 points for the NAIA Geoducks. TESC outrebounded
the Loggers by just one board, 30 to 29.
The Loggers will make their home debut on Saturday night when
they play host to Menlo. Tip with the Oaks is set for 6:00
p.m. at Memorial Fieldhouse in Tacoma, Wash.
