CALDWELL, Idaho - Puget Sound used a huge first half to ride out
a 60-51 non-conference victory over the host College of Idaho in
the 2009 Lady 'Yote Classic championship game Saturday evening in
Caldwell, Idaho.
Puget Sound jumped out to a massive lead in the first half,
leading the 12th-ranked 'Yotes 41-16 after the first period. The
Loggers shot 60.9 percent from the field to College of Idaho's 25
percent.
The Loggers' hot hands cooled in the second half, as they shot
only 34.8 percent for the period. Fortunately, the lead from the
first half was large enough and Puget Sound coasted through the
duration of the game, leading by as much as 27 during one point
early in the period.
The Lady 'Yotes cut the lead to seven points with just under two
minutes to play, but it was too little to late and the Loggers left
the building with another victory under their belts.
Senior Claire Ely (Walnut Creek, Calif./Northgate) led the way for
the Loggers, scoring 24 points while playing all 40 minutes of the
contest. Ely shot 7-13 from the field, including 9-9 on free
throws. Sophomore Jocelyn Riordan (Lake Forest Park,
Wash./Shorecrest) also added 11 points and six rebounds for Puget
Sound.
Senior Nicole Gall was the only member of the Lady 'Yotes to
score in double digits. Gall finished with 11 points, but a dismal
36.2 team shot percentage doomed the host team in the end.
Puget Sound will enjoy some time off before taking on St. Martins
at home on Dec. 9. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. in Memorial Fieldhouse
in Tacoma, Wash.
