THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Senior guard Claire Ely (Walnut Creek,
Calif./Northgate) put together yet another outstanding performance
as the Puget Sound Loggers came back to beat the Chapman Panthers,
64-59, in a NCAA Division III women's basketball game on Saturday
night at Gilbert Arena in Thousand Oaks, Calif.
In the first half, the Loggers and Panthers exchanged leads
early but the Panthers grabbed control midway through, building a
nine-point lead with 4:57 left in the period. The Loggers
eventually chipped at the lead, using a three-pointer by Kelsey
McKinnis (Ashland, Ore.) to pull within two points at halftime,
32-30.
In the second half, Puget Sound began to take control, taking
the lead again on a layup by Sha'Ran Lowe (Oakland, Calif./Oakland
Tech) with 14:52 left to play. Chapman tried to post a
comeback, taking the lead back for a little but but a layup by
freshman Lindsay Layland (Homer, Alaska) with 1:24 put the Loggers
up by two and they finished the game on a 7-2 run to win their
sixth game of the season, 64-59.
The Loggers were led by 26 points from Ely, who was seven-for-11
from the field and a perfect 11-for-11 from the free throw
line. Natasha Ludwig (Hilo, Hawaii/Waiakea) and Layland each
finished with 11 points. Ludwig also added a team-high eight
rebounds in teh win.
Chapman was led by 16 points from Linda Ly and 15 points from
Simone Ibbotson. Casey Gomez chipped in nine points in the
loss.
The Loggers have a big test in store for them on Saturday when
they take on undefeated Cal Lutheran. Tip-off with the Regals
is set for 8:00 p.m. in Thousand Oaks, Calif.
