FOREST GROVE, Ore. - Playing in their first overtime game of the
2008-09 season, the Puget Sound Loggers fell to the hometown
Pacific Boxers, 73-70, in a Northwest Conference women's basketball
game on Friday night at Pacific Athletic Complex in Forest Grove,
Ore.
In the first half, the Boxers came out strong, collecting an
early lead, but the Loggers stepped up as well, pulling even around
the 12 minute mark of the first half. The Boxers answered back with
a 13-3 run that put them up by ten, 25-15, with 8:16 to go in the
opening period. The Loggers cut the lead but Pacific remained
ahead, 32-29, heading into the halftime break.
In the second half, the Loggers did their best to cut the Boxer
lead and eventually took the lead with 9:55 remaining on a jumper
by Karen Chase (Yakima, Wash./West Valley). Puget Sound held on to
a narrow lead until the 1:26 mark when Pacific's Erica Schultz hit
a free throw to tie the game at 62-62 and that is where the score
would stay when the buzzer sounded to mark the end of regulation.
The Boxers came out strong in overtime, scoring the period's
first six points and holding the Loggers without a score until the
2:12 mark. Despite their best efforts, the Loggers were unable to
stop the fired-up Boxers, who collected the 73-70 overtime victory.
The Loggers were led by a career-high 28 points from Claire Ely
(Walnut Creek, Calif./Northgate), including 14-of-17 from the
charity stripe. Chase finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds while
freshman Jocelyn Riordan (Lake Forest Park, Wash./Shorecrest) added
13 points.
Pacific was led by 33 points from Rochelle Reeves. Erica Schultz
added 18 points and 11 rebounds in the winning effort.
The Loggers, who have already clinched the second seed in the
Northwest Conference Tournament, will travel to Willamette on
Saturday to conclude the regular season. Tip-off with the Boxers is
set for 6:00 p.m. at Memorial Fieldhouse in Tacoma, Wash.
