YAKIMA, Wash. - Sweeping through doubles to go up
by three early in the match, the Linfield Wildcats won a shortened
match over the Puget Sound Loggers, 5-0, to advance to the
semifinal round of the 2009 Northwest Conference Men's Tennis
Championship on Friday at the Yakima Tennis Club in Yakima, Wash.
The Wildcats, ranked 12th in the latest ICA West
Region Rankings, collected 8-4 victories at both the number one and
number three doubles positions to guarantee themselves a lead
heading into singles play. The Linfield team of Kyle Anderson and
Tal DeWitt also collected a victory, defeating the UPS squad of Sam
Finkleman and Nick Kelley, 8-6.
In singles play, Mark Magdaong defeated Alex
Harrison at the number two position, 6-1 and 6-0 while Walt James
held off Zac Peeler, 6-2 and 6-3, in the third position. The
Loggers were leading at the number one and number five positions
while Linfield led at the numbers four and six spots when the match
was ended.
Linfield moves on to play second-seed Pacific
Lutheran on Friday afternoon for the opportunity to advance to the
NWC Title Game. Puget Sound earns a spot in the 5th/6th place
match, which will take place later on Friday.
