TACOMA, Wash. - With just 13 combined shots over 96:45, the
Puget Sound Loggers met an ironic end, falling to the Whitworth
Pirates, 1-0. on an overtime penalty kick in a Northwest Conference
men's soccer match on Saturday afternoon on Peyton Field at Baker
Stadium in Tacoma, Wash.
The defensive battle saw just three shots registered, all by
Puget Sound, in the first 45 minutes as both teams kept the
pressure on the opposing team to prevent many chances. In the
second half, the two teams found their offense as Whitworth
recorded five shots, just one on goal, while the Loggers had three
shots, two of them on frame. Despite the chances, neither
team could find the back of the net.
After heading to overtime, the game met its ironic end in the
97th minute when Logger keeper Chris McDonald (Newton, Mass./Noble
& Greenough) was judged by the center referee to have played a
ball on a Whitworth attacker a little too hard and the Pirates were
awarded a penalty kick. With the game on the line,
Whitworth's Travis Gutierrez successfully converted the attempt,
firing the ball into the upper right corner for the game-winner.
The goal allowed by McDonald was the first he has allowed in
360:45 as he suffered the first loss of his collegiate
career. Brian Sherpe of Whitworth also had a solid game,
making three saves to collect the shutout. The Loggers
outshot the Pirates, 7-6, and held a 4-3 advantage on
corners. Whitworth was whistled for 13 fouls in the game,
compared with just eight for the Loggers.
Puget Sound will look to bounce back on Sunday when they play
host to Whitman, beginning at 2:30 p.m. on Peyton Field at Baker
Stadium in Tacoma, Wash.
